Meat prices

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else noticed the price of meat is out of control and the cuts aren’t all that great , I was in the grocery store the other day and wanted to get a beef tenderloin and the thing was quite literally just about 100 dollars it was 96.22 that’s a price I’m not willing to pay for meat ! Why is it so out of control .

General cost of doing business. There aren't high margins on groceries. The farmers, meat processors or grocery stores aren't getting rich off us buying meat. Now when you buy pop and chips you're paying for a lot of luxury cars and vacations. To be honest I find the cost of produce harder to justify, I can find chicken for $2.99 a lb on any given day but peppers and cucumbers are $3.99/lb.

Yea, I do tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, lettuce, peppers and strawberries along with some herbs.. unfortunately that doesn't last much of the year in Canada.

Same goes for chicken wings. Used to love buying a big pack for me and the wife once every couple of weeks. Now it seems prices have basically doubled in the past few years. Now it's a treat every couple of months.

I understand that everyone has to make money but it’s our government that’s making it hard for everyone the suppliers right down to the consumer , high fuel costs , feed prices , labour to process the items it just goes on and on , and the people that can’t afford to eat healthy and have health problems to the diet they consume gets past on to the healthcare which the government pays for . There has to be a solution.

Yep,

If we want carbon taxes in addition to the existing mega-taxes on fuel (personally I think it's a scam) all food prices will increase.

If we want to protect our dairy farmers and egg producers and keep the monopoly marketing boards and quotas, we will pay higher prices for milk and eggs.

Same for cheese, but IIRC this is changing.

( a little while ago, I read about a poor schmuck in St Catherines I think it was, that went to jail for illegally importing cheese and selling to restaurants.  I think he would probably have done less time if it was fentanyl)

Then there's the Maple Syrup Mafia - try to sell syrup from your own trees and you go straight to jail - if you're lucky and don't get kneecapped first.

Da comrades...

IMHO, markets should be as free as possible and this will ensure the best possible prices because of maximum competition.

Who does more extortion the mafia or our government? I’m guessing it’s number 2. I know there are people that love Justin Trudeau but I myself think he has caused more harm to our country than good. And If you notice when the heat is on overseas And is expected to help he can’t make a decision and backs off and hopes trump takes care of it. Contrary to what people believe we have a good Military, We have quite a few military men on here that are highly respected , all you have to do is talk to them and you quickly figure out the system is flawed .

Right, it's actually the Government that supports and protects the Mafias' monopolies by law, so yeah, ultimately it's government's fault.

Far too many Canadians in my opinion expect big government to solve all their problems when in reality government almost always IS the problem.

Personally, I've always felt that I need to protect myself FROM the government much more often than being protected BY the government.

I own a butcher shop.  Trust me we are not getting rich,.  Actually in the 20+ years I’ve owned one, our margins are at the lowest they have been.

i watched all my prices go up 40 cents across the board the week after the carbon tax came in.  When you are buying a $3 a pound product over 10% in a week as a permanent increase over normal seasonal fluctuations is a big hit.

The government has done nothing but regulate us out of business all the while pretending they are keeping customers safe.  Thank god Ford got in and removed all the extra paid sick days and the other min wage increase for students.  Seriously $15 to train a kid that fucks up and knows nothing, especially now, there is no work ethic, you need to teach it.

In the last 10 years my power bill has more than doubled, all raw material prices have done the same.  I expect inflation to increase prices, but lately they keep spiraling out of control.

Honestly I keep hoping I win the lottery so I can move to Mexico and get out of this place.

As I said I believe the government is driving people into poverty and poor health .

Those in power have an agenda, and it’s not about the happiness of Canadians.  The saddest part is people keep voting him back in???

Its so obvious that their main goal is to pad their own pockets.

Now I don’t mind if you pad you pocket while you are increasing something in my life, so either education, health, standard of living, it doesn’t even need to equate to more money for me,  but when you decrease everything above and then think I’m too stupid to notice?

Like Trump.  Yes he’s an idiot, but he wants America to do better so he makes more money and does better.  So if the average person is getting a benefit while he lines his pockets, well so be it.

Trudeau on the other hand, hands out money to every large corporation, which you know is sending money to his overseas account in exchange, now double thinking the pipeline, because his dividends in overseas oil may drop if we become more self sufficient, and then wants to remove our guns so even if we need to revolt, we cannot.  So we pay more tax, so he can give billions to UN countries and increase immigration as stipulated by the UN?

Btw I have no issues in giving money as long as it’s tied aid.  Or an investment that we will get a return.

Like people bitching at Ford for putting money into gambling instead of other areas, well the investment in the gambling will increase revenues which can be used in other areas.  Buying out the electrical contracts hurts now, but in the future will save billions and help to keep our power rates under control.

People voting are to blame.  It’s too bad most can’t see past what benefits them.  Not many think about what is good for the country in a whole, lots only think of themselves in the short term.

I'm a vegetarian so I don't check the price of meat but eating organic like I do isn't cheap either, believe me.

We complain about the prices like it’s the retailers fault but the are struggling to make money too it’s the people running our country making the poor decisions when the retailer is hurt it rolls down hill on to us the consumer so everyone in the chain is hurting the only ones benefiting is the ones calling the shots in the government. But they are also ones using the tax dollars for travel , expensive meals and high end escorts we suffer to pad their lifestyles !

Since 1995 when I first opened, my margins are the smallest, and people spend the least per visit.  Less off the cuff purchases have dropped this, almost everyone brings a list now.

Now my business has grown, so I have more customers, higher gross sales, but that’s not the governments doing, that’s me because every time they bring in a new tax or high energy rates, i knuckle down and push harder for more customers.  Most of this occurs thru my free afterhours sweat equity.

so pretty much I work harder for less.

But I believe everyone is feeling the pinch.

My belief is that the packing houses are making the majority of the profits.  There are so few small guys and there is really only 2 big beef processors, and I guarantee they talk to each other.

It is funny though, people will  spend $8 for grapes, but won’t spend over $3 for boneless skinless chicken breasts, then get upset if the animals are mass produced, lol.

Cross rib is crap.  I only use it for ground.  Too tough and a huge chunk of tissue runs thru it.  Even with age it can still be tough.

First off quit buying your meat at a grocery store if you want tender product. It’s worth the couple extra dollars.  Think how much dud you save when you threw that roast out?

Next time you want something to fall apart when you cook it low and slow buy a boneless blade or chuck.

It will be much better.

He assured me it was a great cut if cooked with care he said low and slow covered with a little water in the bottom of the roasting pan. It was terrible throwing it away.

Lol, maybe that was his idea of good.

Its not a great cut.  It is actually the lowest cut you can buy as a roast.  It would kinda be like the piece of meat on us that would be our upper lat, rear delt.

If there was some age on it, it may not have been shoe leather.  You would have still had to chew it a bit, but would have been edible.

seriously I only use it for ground, I wouldn’t sell it to a customer.  When people ask for a cross rib roast I sell them a chuck roast.

This way I won’t get it returned for being tough, lol.

Its name on the box would be shoulder clod.  Even the name sounds tough, lol.
